What are the GRAMMYs®

The GRAMMYs® are considered music's highest achievement; they're also the industry's only peer-voted award. Pair all that with live performances by world-class acts on show night, and it's clear that the GRAMMYs® aren't known as “Music’s Biggest Night®” for nothing.

Winners in GRAMMYs® categories are determined by a voting membership made up of music makers who represent all musical genres and creative disciplines – disciplines that include recording artists, songwriters, composers, producers, mixers, and engineers.

The 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards® represent recordings released during the eligibility period, from Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 15, 2023.

The 1st Annual GRAMMY Awards® were held on May 4, 1959, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony involved 28 categories – less than one-third of today's 94 categories. Notable winners of that first event included Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

The GRAMMYs® became a live TV event starting in 1971 with the 13th Annual GRAMMY Awards®. In 1973, CBS broadcast its first GRAMMYs® ceremony – the network has been its TV home ever since.
